We are now at the point in society when we are trying to save resources and reuse everything we receive, but would it sometimes be better not to receive some things in the first place?  I’m not talking like ameneties and life essentials and such, but perhaps shop receipts.  Should we be able to choose whether we receive them or not?

ATMs are a great example of this, they give you the choice of “Cash with receipt” or “Cash without receipt”.  How many people choose the ‘without’ option?  I would guess a lot.  How many people choose the ‘with’ option and still just leave it sticking out the machine?  I would guess a reasonable amount too.  If this second group of people actually read what they were asking for then we could save even more paper and ink (perhaps that is an interface issue though and that will be another post altogether!).

Sainsburys have made a step in the right direction recently and started printing their receipts double sided (cutting till point paper use by 40 per cent), so now your fortnightly shopping receipt is merely half as long (but still the same amount of ink) than the usual concertina origami masterpiece you were previously presented with.

I’m not saying abolish receipts altogether but give people the choice.  In some cases the receipt may act as your guarantee or necessary proof of purchase but Apple are good at this, they email you a receipt.  You can then choose to print it yourself, but even if you don’t you still have an electronic copy of it and, presumably, so does the retailer if things all go wrong.

About once a month I go through my wallet and empty it of what seems like hundreds of receipts.  I rarely go back and look at them or use them, they merely act as wallet padding for my backside.  Although I shred them into my recycling I can’t help but feel that it is still a waste of paper and ink which could have been saved had I had the choice at the till point.  Until we reach the point where it is feasible for the whole world to run on e-receipts let’s save a whole load of paper and ink and give people the choice.
